20+ Lessons I’ve Learned in 20+ Years in the Hair Industry
Jan 29, 2025
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working in the hair industry for over two decades. Along the way, I’ve picked up some invaluable lessons that have shaped the way I work, my business, and how I navigate this exciting industry.
So if you're just starting out, or you're looking to level up your skills and knowledge, here's a little roadmap based on the lessons I've learned over the years. Trust me, this is the good stuff!
1. Look After Your Body
The hair industry can be physically demanding, especially on your back and shoulders. Watch your posture, take breaks, and make sure you’re staying fit. You need your body to keep doing what you love, so take care of it!
2. Invest in Education
This industry is constantly evolving, and the best stylists never stop learning. Whether it's a new technique, tool, or trend, keep investing in yourself. You are absolutely worth it. Remember, your education is your biggest asset.
3. Charge Your Worth
This one is crucial. You’ve worked hard to build your skills, and your time is valuable. Stop charging like it’s a hobby. Don’t undersell yourself! Know your worth and price your services accordingly.
4. Not Everyone Is Your Client
It’s OK to say no. Not every potential client is a good fit for you. Focus on the people who appreciate your expertise and make sure they are the right ones for you. Trust me, it makes all the difference!
5. Avoid Burnout
Respect your time and your energy. Working 10+ hour days on just coffee and chocolate bars isn’t sustainable. Schedule proper breaks, take time off, and focus on your most profitable services. Work smarter, not harder.
6. Build Up Savings
The hair and beauty business can be unpredictable. Build up savings so you’re prepared for the quieter months or those unexpected rainy days. It’s always good to have a financial cushion.
7. Get Reviews
Never be afraid to ask your clients for reviews. One good review can lead to three more clients. Google reviews are particularly powerful, as they are often the first place potential clients will check before booking with you.
8. Build Your Brand
Your brand is everything! Be consistent with your messaging, visuals, and overall presence – especially on social media. The more you put yourself out there, the more people will recognise and trust you.
9. Have Boundaries
Set clear working hours and stick to them. Your clients don’t need access to you 24/7. Balance is key for longevity in this business, and it helps protect your personal life, too.
10. Master Client Consultations
Always take the time to listen to your clients. Manage their expectations and ensure you have the right systems in place – consultations, release forms, after-care instructions. Honest communication builds trust and sets the stage for a positive experience.
11. Take Deposits
This is a must-do! Protect yourself from no-shows by taking deposits upfront. It ensures both you and your clients are committed to the appointment.
12. Master the Client Experience
The way you make your clients feel is just as important as the service you provide. 75% of why clients come back is because of how you make them feel during and after the appointment. Make them feel like a million bucks!
13. Don’t Forget to Take Photos
Before-and-after photos are a goldmine for showcasing your work. Clients love seeing their transformations, and future clients will be drawn in by your stunning work. It’s also a great way to build your portfolio.
14. Set Goals
Where do you want to be in 6 months? 3 years? 5 years? Setting goals helps give you direction and purpose. They keep you motivated and help you track your progress.
15. Celebrate Every Win
Big or small, take the time to celebrate your achievements. Hitting client goals, learning a new skill, or winning an award – these moments are what make the hard work worth it. Acknowledge them!
16. Hair Extensions Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All
Everyone’s hair is different. To cater to a wider audience, it’s essential to offer multiple methods of hair extensions to accommodate various hair types and budgets.
17. Every Master Was Once a Disaster
Remember, no one starts as a master. Keep learning, keep practising, and embrace the journey. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but every step forward counts.
18. Plan Your Finances
Without clear financial goals, you’re essentially driving blindfolded. If you know how many clients you need to reach your financial goals, your business decisions will be much clearer and more focused.
19. Learn to Market Yourself
In today’s world, it’s all about marketing. People buy from people, so show up, post consistently, interact with your followers, and let your personality shine through. This is your business – own it!
20. Mistakes Happen
We’re all human, and mistakes happen. What matters is how you handle them. Learn from every misstep, fix the situation, and don’t let one bad review or unhappy client define your career.
21. Ask for Feedback
There’s always room for improvement. Ask your clients for feedback and use it to grow. This industry is ever-evolving, and so should you!
